Conrad I of Wettin consolidated Meissen's territorial position during a period of sustained conflict with neighboring Saxon lords, and bracteate production under his rule reflects the broader shift away from two-sided pfennig coinage that swept through central German minting in the first half of the twelfth century. These thin, single-sided strike pieces were technically easier to produce in quantity but punishingly fragile — the type survives poorly, and even lightly circulated examples typically show stress fractures radiating from the center.
