Denier Bracteate - Albert of Mecklenburg

Albert of Mecklenburg claimed the Swedish throne in 1364 after a coalition of disaffected Swedish nobles invited him to depose Magnus IV, whose reign had become financially chaotic and politically isolated. Albert never consolidated genuine authority, and his 25-year kingship was defined by sustained conflict with the Swedish nobility — a tension that ultimately ended when he was captured at the Battle of Åsle in 1389 by forces loyal to Margaret I of Denmark, who then absorbed Sweden into the Kalmar Union framework.

The bracteate format — a single-sided thin silver striking — was by this period already archaic in much of Europe but persisted in Scandinavian petty coinage well into the fourteenth century. Albert's capture at Åsle effectively ended his minting authority the same year this issue's production ceased.
