| Obverse description | Struck in the bracteate tradition, the obverse presents a stylized lion passant to the left rendered in high relief against a plain field, its body rendered in a bold, schematic manner characteristic of 13th-century Lower Saxon die-cutting. Beneath the lion, a crenellated wall with a central arched gateway is depicted, symbolizing the fortified town of Brunswick. The design occupies a raised central medallion framed by the characteristic wide, flat rim of the bracteate flan.
