Denier Bracteate - Adolphus III

Adolphus III of Schauenburg was among the northern German counts who consolidated territorial authority in the decades following Henry the Lion's forced exile in 1180, and this issue belongs to that period of regional power redistribution. Bracteate production in Holstein at this scale reflects the fragmented monetary landscape of the lower Saxon and Danish march zones, where thin single-sided coins served local exchange precisely because no central authority controlled minting.
