| 表面の説明 | Facing veiled bust of an abbess rendered in low relief beneath a rounded beaded arch, flanked on either side by tall, ornately detailed towers with domed and tiered rooftops characteristic of Romanesque ecclesiastical architecture. The central structure above the arch depicts a domed basilica or abbey church with decorative latticed stonework, evoking the monastery of Gandersheim. The entire composition is contained within a beaded inner border and an outer rope-twist or cable border, typical of mid-12th-century north German bracteate coinage. The design is struck in the thin single-sided bracteate tradition, with the image showing through in mirror relief on the reverse. |

Abbess Adelheid III governed Gandersheim during a period of intense friction between the imperial church and the Welf-Staufen rivalry that repeatedly destabilized Saxony. Gandersheim held the rare privilege of minting rights granted centuries earlier — one of the few female ecclesiastical houses in the empire with that authority — and these thin hammered bracteates represent the abbey exercising that right at nearly its fullest extent.
At half a gram, the flan is structurally marginal; many surviving examples show radial stress cracks from the single-die striking method inherent to bracteate production.
