| Reverse description | A large stylised fleur-de-lis (lily) dominates the central field, a heraldic emblem of the French royal house of Valois. The lily is rendered in the bold, slightly crude fashion characteristic of late 15th-century hammered billon coinage struck at the Bordeaux mint. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with the circumferential legend in uncial Latin reading SIT nOmEn DOmI, an abbreviated invocation meaning 'Blessed be the name of the Lord.' The irregular flan and variable strike are consistent with hand-hammered production of the reign of Charles VIII. |
