Boleslaus IV ruled as Senior Prince under the fragmented succession system established by his father Bolesław III Krzywousty, whose 1138 testament divided Poland among his sons to prevent primogeniture disputes — and promptly created them instead. The Kraków mint held particular political weight during this period, as control of the senior duchy and its revenues was precisely what the younger brothers contested throughout the 1140s and 1150s.
