| Obverse description | Frontal standing figure of Duke Boleslaus III in chain mail armour and crowned helmet, rendered in the Romanesque style characteristic of early Polish medieval coinage. The duke holds a lance or spear in his right hand and a shield in his left, the shield's surface decorated with a pellet ornament. Fragmentary Latin legend BOLEZLAUS appears in the field to the left and right of the figure, the lettering crude and irregular as typical of hammered early Piast deniers. The overall composition fills the irregularly shaped flan, with details of the armour rendered through a granulated or beaded technique. |
