Obverse description Crude bust of a ruler facing right in low relief, rendered in the primitive die-cutting style characteristic of early Piast coinage. The portrait is schematic and stylized, with minimal facial detail, typical of late 10th- to early 11th-century Polish hammered deniers. The surrounding field bears the Latin legend referencing both the Ottonian emperor Otto and Duke Boleslaus. The flan is irregular and slightly cupped, as is common for hand-struck medieval silver of this period.

Additional information

Boleslaus I inherited the Polish duchy in 992 and was only crowned king in 1025, in the final weeks of his life — meaning this denier was struck under a ruler who was technically still a duke for most of the issue's production window. His mints remain unidentified with certainty, and the attribution to a specific workshop is still contested among Polish medieval numismatists. Kop#6 is among the earliest documented Polish coinage types, predating the establishment of any confirmed royal mint infrastructure.
