Additional information

Bernard Ato IV of Carcassonne effectively controlled the viscounty throughout this period despite prolonged conflict with the Trencavel family and shifting alliances with both the counts of Barcelona and Toulouse. His coinage asserted local authority during a period when Carcassonne's political loyalties were genuinely contested. The denier type referenced under Poey d'Avant LXXXIII/19 is among the more precisely documented of the southern French feudal issues from this period, which is itself unusual — most contemporaneous Languedoc deniers survive in quantities too small for confident typological sorting.
