The surrounding peripheral legend reads ✠ PAPIA CIVITAS, identifying the mint city of Pavia in Latin, struck in characteristic Carolingian capitals. The flan shows the typical irregularities and surface porosity of a hand-struck early medieval silver coin. The composition and style are consistent with the third coinage of Berengar I as king of Italy. |
