Obverse description Central cross pattée with pointed terminals set within a beaded inner circle, the four quarters of the cross each adorned with a pellet. The imperial legend encircles the design in the outer field, rendered in a somewhat irregular Carolingian minuscule characteristic of early tenth-century Italian hammered coinage. The overall composition is typical of the Carolingian cross-type denier, emphasizing Christian imperial authority.
