Benedict III's pontificate began under extraordinary duress: a rival faction installed the antipope Anastasius Bibliothecarius by force in 855, physically assaulting Benedict before imperial intervention restored him to the throne within days. The joint monogram coinage with Louis II reflects the political settlement that followed — a deliberate display of papal-Carolingian solidarity at a moment when both parties needed to demonstrate that the Roman succession was settled and legitimate.
Louis II was the only Carolingian emperor to spend the majority of his reign actually present in Italy, campaigning against Arab raiders in the south throughout this period.
