Obverse description A large cross of András (apostolic double cross) type displayed within a shield-shaped frame occupies the central field, with the arms of the cross terminating in decorative pellets or wedge-shaped finials. Foliate or branch-like ornaments flank the shield on either side. The legend B ELA REX is disposed around the design, identifying the issuing monarch. The overall composition is characteristic of the crude, hand-struck style of 12th-century Hungarian bracteate-influenced deniers. The surface shows the irregular flan typical of hammered medieval coinage.
