Additional information

Béla III's reign marked a sharp reorientation of the Hungarian court toward Byzantine administrative models — he had spent years at Constantinople as a designated heir to Manuel I Komnenos before dynastic circumstance returned him to Esztergom. The royal revenues he reorganized were substantial enough that contemporary accounts placed Hungary's income on par with that of France, which makes the extreme lightness of this silver issue all the more striking as a statement of minting policy rather than poverty.
