Aymeri IV held the viscounty jointly with his mother Ermengarde III for years before assuming sole authority, and the Narbonnais monetary tradition was perpetually complicated by the competing jurisdictional claims of the archbishops of Narbonne, who retained co-seigneurial rights over the city itself. Gilles Aycelin, named archbishop in 1290, was no passive partner — he would later serve Philippe IV as chancellor of France and play a significant role in the proceedings against the Knights Templar.
The narrow window of this joint issue reflects Aycelin's departure for royal service rather than any rupture between the two authorities.
