Obverse description Plain field bearing a letter R surmounted by a horizontal bar, flanked on either side by a cross to the left and a balled bar to the right. The design is characteristic of the anonymous Carolingian denier series struck at Metz, with boldly incuse monogrammatic elements typical of early medieval hammered coinage. The surface is irregular and worn, consistent with hand-struck fabric of the period. The partial legend +RI appears along the periphery.
