The outer legend, reading ✠ CAINONI CASTRO, runs between the beaded inner circle and the irregular coin edge, identifying the Chinon mint as 'Castle of Chinon.' The lettering is in the angular Carolingian script characteristic of feudal ecclesiastical issues of this period.
