Obverse description Diademed and draped bust of Saint Martin facing right, rendered in the schematic Carolingian style typical of late 9th- to early 10th-century ecclesiastical coinage. The effigy displays a beaded diadem and a jewelled collar or clasp at the neck, with the portrait enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, reading TVRON, identifies the issuing city of Tours and runs along the outer border of the flan.

Reverse description A plain Greek cross centered within a beaded inner circle, its arms extending to the circumference of the circle, with the field otherwise plain. The outer legend, reading ✠ CAINONI CASTRO, runs between the beaded inner circle and the irregular coin edge, identifying the Chinon mint as 'Castle of Chinon.' The lettering is in the angular Carolingian script characteristic of feudal ecclesiastical issues of this period.
