| Obverse description | Central field features a cross pattée enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the quadrants between the arms of the cross each containing a small pellet or wedge motif. Surrounding the inner circle, the Latin legend reads ✠ AVTSIODER CI (City of Auxerre), the letters rendered in the somewhat irregular, angular style characteristic of early medieval hammered coinage. The outer border is defined by the irregular, flan edge typical of hand-struck deniers of this period. The overall composition is consistent with the anonymous episcopal or comital denier type of the Auxerre mint, exhibiting the stylized, archaic letter-forms common to the 10th–12th century Burgundian series. |
