| Obverse description | Central cross pattée with six radiating arms occupying the field, struck in high relief characteristic of early medieval hammered coinage. The cross divides the field into quadrants. A circular legend surrounds the central device, reading SCE MARIAE in Latin characters, invoking the Virgin Mary as patron of the diocese of Le Puy. The flan is irregular and slightly concave, typical of tenth-century episcopal billon deniers. |
