Obverse description At center, an upright episcopal crozier is depicted with its curved volute turned to the left, serving as the principal device of the obverse field. The crozier is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A Latin legend circumscribes the inner circle, reading EPIS.C.OPVS — an abbreviated form of EPISCOPVS, denoting the bishop as issuing authority — introduced by a cross pattée. The hammered flan exhibits the irregular, slightly uneven edge characteristic of mid-thirteenth-century feudal coinage from southern France.
