Reverse description A cross pattée occupies the central field, with two pellets and two stylized roses alternating in the four angles between the arms of the cross, a decorative arrangement typical of Lotharingian ecclesiastical deniers of the late 12th century. The flan is irregular and the strike weak, consistent with hammered production of the period. The peripheral legend reads SPINAL, denoting the issuing locality of Épinal.
