Obverse description Facing right bust of Saint Stephen depicted in the Carolingian tradition, wearing a diademed crown with pendant earrings and an ornamented draped garment decorated with pellets. The effigy is rendered in a stylized, hieratic manner typical of early 12th-century episcopal coinage. The surrounding legend reads SANCTVS STEPHANVS, identifying the patron saint of the Cathedral of Metz, enclosed within a beaded inner border. A small circular countermark or test mark is visible to the left of the bust in the field.
