The anonymous deniers of Chartres were struck under the authority of the counts during a period when the county changed hands significantly — passing through the Châtelet family line before absorption into the French royal domain under Philip IV in 1293, which effectively ended independent comital coinage there. The deliberate anonymity of the type, carrying no named authority, was a common feudal hedge: it allowed successive lords to circulate the same die types without costly retooling between successions.
Billon quality on these varies considerably across the seventy-year span of issue, with later strikes generally debased further as royal monetary pressure on feudal mints intensified.
