Obverse description Central field displays the Carolingian monogram of Charles the Bald, composed of interlaced letters forming a cross-like device, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in bold relief characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage. Surrounding the inner circle, the circular legend reads GRATIA D-I REX, introduced by a cross pattée, proclaiming Charles as king by the grace of God. The outer field is populated with a series of pellets and decorative elements between the inner and outer borders, typical of ninth-century Frankish ecclesiastical mint production.
