| Beschrijving keerzijde | A plain Greek cross with equal arms occupies the center of the reverse field, enclosed within a prominent beaded circle. The cross arms extend nearly to the inner beaded border, dividing the inner field into four equal quadrants. The surrounding legend, reading DRIOMENSIS (of Riom), runs in Gothic characters between the beaded circle and the outer toothed border of the coin. |

Alphonse of Poitiers received Auvergne through his 1241 appanage grant from his brother Louis IX, making him simultaneously Count of Poitiers, Toulouse, and Auvergne — an accumulation of comital authority that made him one of the most powerful magnates in thirteenth-century France despite never seeking autonomy from the crown. His coinages reflect a man governing through Capetian loyalty rather than feudal independence. The billon content of these deniers declined across his tenure as silver was progressively debased to fund his two crusading expeditions alongside Louis.
