| Beschrijving keerzijde | A bold Greek cross with equal arms extending toward the inner beaded border, dividing the reverse field into four quarters. Decorative elements, possibly fleurs or pellets, appear in the angles of the cross. The surrounding legend ANFONS REX, identifying Alfonso as king, runs along the periphery within the beaded circle. The overall design is typical of the simplified ecclesiastical cross type employed on Leonese billon coinage of the early thirteenth century. |

Alfonso IX's deniers were struck during a reign defined by almost constant warfare — against Castile, against Portugal, and intermittently against his own excommunication by Pope Celestine III, who objected to Alfonso's marriage to Teresa of Portugal on grounds of consanguinity. The Church's ban briefly disrupted institutional life across León but appears to have had no effect on mint output.
AB#121 is among the more frequently encountered types of Leonese billon coinage, though the low silver content makes surviving pieces vulnerable to heavy corrosion that can obscure die detail entirely.
