Albert of Brandenburg-Ansbach, the last Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights in Prussia, converted to Lutheranism in 1525 and on the advice of Martin Luther himself secularized the Knightly State into the Duchy of Prussia — the first Protestant duchy in Europe. These small billon pieces belong to the earliest coinage of that new political entity, struck across a thirty-year span as Albert worked to establish functioning ducal institutions from what had been a crusading military order's administrative apparatus.
