Albero of Montreuil, Archbishop of Trier from 1131 to 1152, was among the most politically aggressive prelates of his generation — a kingmaker who backed Lothair III against the Hohenstaufen and later maneuvered Conrad III into a corner over Trier's ecclesiastical privileges. His coinage reflects the archbishopric's insistence on temporal as well as spiritual authority in the Moselle region, where the archbishops of Trier had exercised mint rights since the Carolingian period.
