Obverse description Crude hammered obverse featuring an interlaced or knotwork design at the centre, typical of early medieval Breton feudal coinage, surrounded by a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads ALAI RIX in debased Latin characters, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The overall execution is irregular and somewhat barbarous in style, reflecting the primitive monetary production of eleventh-century Brittany. The field displays the ornamental motif characteristic of the Alain III issues, with letters formed in the angular majuscule style of the period.
