Agapetus II held the papacy almost entirely under the thumb of Alberic II, the self-styled "Prince and Senator of all the Romans," who controlled Rome from 932 until his death in 954. Alberic permitted Agapetus to exercise spiritual authority while keeping temporal power firmly within his own dynasty — an arrangement this coinage makes explicit by placing both names on a single issue. It is one of the very few medieval coins that openly advertises a pope's political subordination during his own pontificate.
