Obverse lettering PAPAE ✠ AGAPITVS
(Translation: Pope Agapetus.)
Reverse description Irregular hammered flan bearing a central cross or abbreviated monogram device enclosed within a beaded inner circle, consistent with Carolingian denier typology. The surrounding legend reads ROMA ✠ SCS PETRVS in crude Latin capitals, identifying the mint city of Rome and invoking Saint Peter, the patron of the Papal See. The reverse exhibits heavy surface corrosion and mineral encrustation, partially obscuring the design, yet the two-line legend arrangement characteristic of mid-tenth-century Roman pontifical coinage remains discernible. The workmanship reflects the rudimentary engraving standards prevalent at the Rome mint under the early medieval popes.
