Obverse description Central field bears a heraldic shield, the arms of the Bishopric of Metz, rendered in low relief in the characteristic crude hammered style of 14th-century ecclesiastical coinage. The shield is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with floral or foliate ornaments filling the surrounding field between the inner and outer beaded borders. The design is typical of Lotharingian episcopal deniers of the period, with bold, compact relief despite the small module.
