Adalbert III was expelled from the Salzburg archbishopric twice — first in 1174 by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, who replaced him with the imperial antipope's candidate, and again in 1200. His tenure was defined less by ecclesiastical administration than by his persistent alignment with the Welf faction against Hohenstaufen imperial authority. Coinage struck under his name spans those interruptions, and attributing specific dies to periods of actual control versus exile remains an open problem in the series.
