Adalbert III held the archbishopric under almost continuous political pressure, expelled from Salzburg twice — first by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in 1168, then again in 1194 under Henry VI. Much of his tenure was spent in exile, and coin production during the gaps was interrupted or conducted under rival administrations. Whether a given denier from this period was struck during one of his restorations or under an interregnum claimant is rarely answerable with certainty.
