Bohemond III ruled Antioch for nearly four decades after his mother Constance's regency ended in 1163, navigating the principality through an increasingly precarious position between the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Byzantine Empire, and the advancing Zengid and later Ayyubid powers. This classe E denier belongs to the extended coinage of his majority — a long reign that saw Antioch progressively squeezed territorially, its mint output reflecting a gradual debasement of the billon alloy as fiscal pressure mounted.
Metcalf's classification separates the classe E issues from earlier helmet-head deniers partly on die-linkage and metal quality grounds.
