Obverse description Within an unbordered field, the monogram LVG rendered in large, boldly struck capital letters occupying the central area of the flan, surmounted by an abbreviation bar indicated by a horizontal stroke above. The inscription is abbreviated and refers to the mint toponym Lugdunum (Lyon) or a related Frankish mint. The lettering is deeply engraved in a characteristic Merovingian uncial style, with no surrounding legend. The flan is irregular and slightly off-round, consistent with hand-struck hammered coinage of the early Frankish period.
