| Beschrijving voorzijde | A Cross Fleury rendered in a primitive, stylised manner occupies the central field, its flared terminals extending toward the coin's irregular flan. The design is executed in low relief characteristic of early medieval hammered coinage, with a roughly granular or pellet-bordered inner frame visible around the central motif. The overall composition reflects the archaic die-cutting style typical of Rhenish episcopal deniers of the 11th–12th centuries. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
The Bishops of Basel held imperial minting rights granted by the Holy Roman Emperors, and the deniers produced under this authorization circulated across a region where ecclesiastical and secular authority were in near-constant friction — the Investiture Controversy tore through the episcopate during precisely this period, with Basel's bishops repeatedly forced to choose sides between pope and emperor. Bishop Burkhard of Basel was among those deposed during that struggle.
Attribution within this minting period remains difficult; individual issues are rarely assignable to a specific bishop without die-study support.
