The Bishopric of Basel held imperial minting rights granted by the Salian emperors, and coins struck under this authority circulated widely across the Upper Rhine corridor throughout the twelfth century. Episcopal minting in this region was frequently contested — secular lords repeatedly challenged the bishop's control over local currency, making the administrative continuity implied by this long date range more fractious in practice than it appears on paper.
