Andorra's medieval coinage operated under the joint suzerainty arrangement established by the 1278 and 1288 Pariatges between the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix — but these billon deniers predate that formal agreement entirely, struck when ecclesiastical authority in the region was still consolidating against competing Carolingian successor claims. Attribution of specific pieces to Andorran rather than broader Urgell episcopal production remains a genuine scholarly problem; the political geography of the central Pyrenees in the eleventh century makes clean issuer distinctions nearly impossible.
