Vasily I spent much of his reign navigating the competing pressures of the Golden Horde and the expanding Grand Duchy of Lithuania — paying tribute east while watching Vitovt absorb Russian principalities to the west. The Moscow denga of this period reflects a mint operating under those constraints, producing small silver at irregular intervals tied closely to tribute demands and available bullion.
HP II#1550 A/C places this among the more precisely attributed varieties of Vasily's coinage, which is not always straightforward — Moscow issues of this reign overlap considerably in type with those of appanage princes imitating Moscow's designs.
