Reverse description Cyrillic inscription occupying the central field of the irregular flan, arranged in multiple lines in the manner typical of Russian appanage-period dengas. The letters are crudely formed and partially legible, reflecting the primitive engraving standards of the period. The inscription likely names the issuing prince or the principality of Suzdal. The flan edges are ragged and uneven, characteristic of hand-cut silver blanks used in fifteenth-century Russian hammered coinage.

Additional information

The absorption of the Nizhny Novgorod-Suzdal principality into Muscovite control was not a clean political transition. Moscow seized the territory in 1392 under Vasily I, but local princes repeatedly attempted to reclaim it with Tatar backing over the following decades. These dengas — struck in the name of Moscow's authority but within the old principality's minting tradition — reflect a transitional administrative moment when neither the coinage nor the political situation had fully resolved.
