The denga issued under Ivan IV's minority rule was part of the sweeping monetary reform of 1535, engineered by his mother and regent Elena Glinskaya. The reform standardized the chaotic post-Mongol coinage landscape — multiple competing regional mints had produced incompatible denominations for decades — and introduced the kopek as the new base unit, with the denga fixed at half that value. Ivan was five years old when the reform launched.
These wire-cut coins, hand-struck on irregular planchets snipped from drawn silver wire, vary considerably in how completely the die image transferred — a consequence of the production method, not mint quality.
