James II (Giacomo II da Carrara) ruled Padua for less than a year before being assassinated in December 1350 by his cousin Giacomo III — one of the bloodier succession disputes in a dynasty not short of them. Coinage struck under his name occupies a correspondingly narrow window, and the piccolo denomination, already the lowest unit in circulation, saw heavy use and rough handling by the time any political violence interrupted production.
The billon content in issues of this type varies enough between surviving specimens to suggest inconsistent alloy control at the Paduan mint during the mid-Trecento.
