正面铭文 + KAROL DEI GRA
背面描述 Within a beaded inner circle, a bold Latin cross with a small globule at the terminus of each arm occupies the central field, a common motif on Angevin coinage of southern Italy and Sicily. The cross is rendered in relatively high relief against a plain field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, reading + REX SICILIE, proclaiming Charles as King of Sicily. The irregular flan edges and weak strike in places are consistent with hammered production of the period.

附加信息

Carlo I d'Angiò received Sicily as a papal fief from Clement IV in 1265, the grant contingent on his defeating Manfred of Sicily at Benevento — which he did in February 1266, killing Manfred in the field. The Angevin monetary system he imposed on the island largely continued Hohenstaufen denominational structures while signaling dynastic rupture through new types. His reign over Sicily ended abruptly with the Sicilian Vespers of March 1282, the uprising that killed thousands of French across the island in a matter of days and handed Sicily to Peter III of Aragon.
