Berthold of Merania governed the Patriarchate of Aquileia from 1218 until his death in 1251, a tenure that coincided with intense friction between the imperial and papal factions tearing through northern Italy. As a member of the Andechs-Merania dynasty — closely tied to the Hohenstaufen — Berthold navigated that allegiance carefully, and his coinage reflects a ruler asserting temporal authority in a territory that was simultaneously an ecclesiastical principality and a strategic corridor into the eastern Alps.
The eagle device on this denaro derives from Hohenstaufen heraldic tradition, a deliberate political signal. Bernardi#15 places this among the earliest issues of his reign, before the series diversified.
