In her right hand she holds a pileus (the freedman's felt cap, emblematic of liberty), and in her left hand a vindicta (rod or wand), the ceremonial staff used in the Roman ritual of manumission. The figure is rendered in the classical allegorical style, with drapery falling in stylised folds. The reverse legend encircles the type, proclaiming the restoration of freedom, a politically charged message issued during the turbulent Year of the Four Emperors. |
