The legend is divided into two lines, with FIDES inscribed above the handclasp and EXERCITVVM below, the whole framed within a beaded border. The handclasp motif was a powerful propagandistic device employed by Vitellius to emphasise his reliance on military support during the tumultuous Year of the Four Emperors. The design is bold and clearly struck, with strong lettering in well-spaced Roman capitals. No exergual line is present. |
