In his raised right hand he carries a spear, while his left hand holds an aquila (legionary eagle standard) and a vexillum (military banner), powerful symbols of Roman military authority and unity. The reverse type alludes directly to the army's role in proclaiming Vitellius emperor during the Year of the Four Emperors.
